Steel Flatcars

Cars on this page were converted from HO flatcars.

This car was kitbashed from a Tyco 40' HO flatcar. The floor is scribed styrene sheet; trucks and couplers are Kadee. Paint was Testor's Ivory; stirrups are staples.

Here is a converted Athearn 50 'flatcar.  The floor is basswood. The Athearn 'Baltimore and Ohio' stenciling was left in place. While B&O is not a narrow gauge line, the lettering gives the car some detail.

Below: the top car is a converted Tyco 50' flat. This is a great car to convert as the floor on the model snaps off, unlike the Athearn flatcar (on bottom) in which the floor has to be cut and filed off. A strip of .060 styrene was inserted between the car halves, bolsters made, couplers mounted, stirrups and brake staff added. Car painted gloss black and then a stripwood floor added.  The sides had to be liberated from the body molding. They were then glued to a styrene core, crosspieces and weight added. Bolsters are from Manheim Machine Works (formerly Ace S Scale), trucks and couplers are Kadee. Car was finished in the same manner as Tyco car.
